meet steve currington...

Most people would say I had the perfect upbringing. My Christian family attended church nearly every Sunday and put me through Christian school. Yet, only two years after graduating high school, I had become hopelessly addicted to cocaine and alcohol. Addiction had stripped me of all self-esteem and a promising career, and had left me crippled in debt.

god's intervention...

My addiction continued well into my twenties and my life was spiraling out of control. At 28, I nearly died in a drunk driving accident. With a punctured lung, I was quickly drowning in my own blood and cried out to God, "I don't want to die!" A life-saving 9-1-1 call was made and I was taken to the hospital. I would later discover the reason for God's intervention that night...

God's wake up call...

As I laid in the hospital bed for over a week, no one I ever drank or used drugs with came to visit me. None of my so-called friends came to see me. My only visitor was a former Sunday School teacher from my old church. He gave me a Bible and asked me to read it, starting with the book of John. In this book I learned how much God loves us. As I read, I came to chapter eight, verse 32, which reads, "And you shall know the Truth and the Truth shall make you free." At that moment, I recalled a verse I had memorized as a youth, John 14:6, where Jesus Said, "...I am the Truth." I realized for the first time that if Jesus is the Truth, then knowing Jesus would set me free.

the first step towards recovery...

After leaving the hospital, my first step towards recovery was to visit the church I had attended as a child. This is where God began to work in my life. I put my trust in Jesus Christ. The One who saved me the day of the accident, who also saved me from all my sins, and gave me the gift of eternal life. If you would like to know how you can know for certain that you will be in Heaven one day, click here. You too can have the same freedom that I found.

finding freedom... finally!

Over the course of the next six months, as I learned more about God, He began removing my addictions. As I continued to grow in my new life and walk with my Savior, I began a Bible Study which soon ballooned to over 200 people. During this time, I wrote down everything I was learning, and began compiling the addictions recovery curriculum, now called Reformers Unanimous.

God continued to bless me and to grow RU. There are now over 1,000 chapters in churches nation-wide. In RU, you will learn the steps that lead to God's blessing. For me, those blessings consisted of a beautiful wife, precious children, and a great career. God allowed me to climb to an executive position in the petroleum industry, and ultimately to become the founder and president of one of the fastest growing, faith-based recovery programs in America. God did that. The best I could do for myself was to live a broken life, filled with addiction, misery and debt. God's love was greater than all my sin. His love alone had the power to free me, and it can free you!

One last thing...

I almost forgot to tell you...the lady who made the 9-1-1 call later became my mother-in-law. Her daughter and I met and began dating at church. She became my wife and is now the mother of our five kids. God is good! - Steve Curington
